Masked Credit Card Number info missing from Sales Payment Entry window. Just shows an A.

After processing a manual credit card payment, the Card Number field, which I would expect to display the masked credit card number (for example, xxxxxxxxxxxx1234), shows the letter A.  How do I fix this?
